”The Scandinavian melancholy flows like a trickling stream clear as springtime, and resembles a french black and white movie from the 1960’s. The material is organic, highly aesthetic and somehow universal”
A couple of years ago, when the first tender demo-versions entered MySpace, one of the leading music magazines in Denmark very accurately described the music created by Katrine Ottosens. Shortly after the attention on Katrines sound, composition and in particularly her voice, began to grow.
In June 2008 CALLmeKAT’s EP “I’m In A Polaroid Where Are You?” got released. Written, performed, recorded and produced by Katrine herself, the EP was created in a broken down barn and former nightclub in the Cat Hill mountains north of New York City in fall 2007, the place where Katrine knitted the sounds from sampler keyboards, home brewed percussions, vinyl samples, birds, dictaphone- and vocal recordings into her laptop. The recording were hereafter mixed and mastered by the Icelandic Valgeir Sigurdsson (Bjørk, Mum, Sigur Rós etc.)
The result: A dreamy, melancholic universe, that received warm reviews in the national press and blogs of music lovers across the globe.
The downplayed melancholy, which characterizes the debut, was recently decribed as “fragile, edgy and dreamly spiced” by Jyllandsposten (national broadsheet). In the same breath the paper described Katrines vocals with the following words: “Katrine Ottosen sings with such sensual and steamy vibratos, that she risks to be judged with extraordinary carbon-dioxide-duties from the greedy Danish state… Katrine Ottosen has one of the most seductive voices, which enters the scene this year… ”
Her voice, as a unique and soulful characteristic, has beyond been the trademark of Katrines own projects, and leaded her in the past to participate in a H&M commercial and features on two albums by the French Nouvelle Vague producer Marc Collin for his project 'Two for the Road' and the album 'Hollywood Mon Amour' along with Skye, Yael Naïm, Juliette Lewis and others. Add to this a large number of concerts abroad, where Katrines music and her charming nature tames everyone in the room.
Recently Katrine has contributed a cover version of The Cure’s “The Lovecats” featured on the tribute album “Perfect As Cats A Tribute To The Cure, released on the American label Manimal Vinyl in fall 2008. On the album, Ottosen finds herself in the gathering amongst names such as: Bat For Lashes, The Dandy Warhols, Blonde Rehead, Devastations and many more.
Besides a number solo shows Katrine toured both national and international scenes as support for Okkervil River, Sebastian Tellier, The Dø, Nouvelle Vague, Mugison and other.
In November 2008 she released her first full-length album “FALL DOWN” under the name CALLmeKAT on Pixiebooth/Playground. The album has been recorded and mixed by Katrine and Daniel Fridell. And once again Valgeir Sigurdsson has put his magic touch on the mastering.
